| Losing a pet is never an easy thing. Here are some resources to help you get through the loss.
PET LOSS RESOURCES
THE PET LOSS GRIEF SUPPORT web site is an excellent web site for grieving pet owners with information on the Rainbow Bridge poem, the candle ceremony, and great links. Here you can have a pet named to the Rainbow Bridge list or Special Needs list and write a tribute. You can also order books on pet loss and learn about an excellent technique, grief support writing, that will help you after you've lost a cherished pet.
LIGHTNING STRIKE is another pet loss site with great poetry, a supportive message board and lots of links. You can even send a pet loss postcard to someone who is hurting.
THE PET LOSS SUPPORT HOTLINE, (888) ISU-PLSH, at Iowa State University is the only completely toll-free pet loss hotline, thanks in part to the IAMs pet food company. Their web site also accepts eulogies for your pet and they'll also send you a free support package via US mail. They're available seven days a week in the evenings.
AMERICAN VETERINARY MEDICINE ASSOCIATION has a list of pet loss hotlines and an excellent article on how to say goodbye to your pet.
THE CORNELL UNIVERSITY PET LOSS SUPPORT HOTLINE is staffed by veterinary students and can be contacted at (607) 253-3932. Their web site also includes information on the stages of grieving, book recommendations, and euthanasia information.
PET MEMORIES is a nice site where you can create a free memorial for your pet (with your photos) and read other memorials.
THE COMPANION ANIMAL RELATED EMOTIONS HELPLINE has some good information on grief and a support hotline staffed by University of Illinois veterinary students. Long-distance calls will be returned collect at (217) 244-CARE. |
